Senator Martin Heinrich is a United States Senator for New Mexico. Elected in 2012, Heinrich - as an engineer - brings a unique perspective on how to create 21st century jobs, protect public lands and wildlife and defend our national security.
Since joining the Senate, Heinrich has fought for legislation to raise the federal minimum wage, close the gender wage gap, reduce the burden of student loan debt, and prevent violence against women. Heinrich is also a leading voice for fixing our nation’s broken immigration system while increasing investments in smart border security.
Heinrich has worked specifically on fostering collaboration between New Mexico’s national laboratories, local businesses, and research institutions. By connecting these fields, he’s created jobs throughout the state that will advance New Mexico’s economy. He’s also fought to combat the effects of climate change and modernize our nation’s electrical grid.
New Mexico is also home to critical military installations and government research centers. With these strong ties to military and research personnel, Heinrich remains deeply committed to ensuring our armed forces have the resources and support they need both during and after their service to our country. New Mexico plays a pivotal role in our national security, and Heinrich is a strong advocate for our personnel and their missions.
Prior to serving in the Senate, Heinrich served as a U.S. House member and an Albuquerque City Councilor. He also served as New Mexico’s Natural Resources Trustee, working to restore the state’s natural environment and the services provided by those resources.
Heinrich and his wife, Julie, have two young sons and take every rare chance they get to enjoy time together outdoors.
