Joe Donnelly

Joe Donnelly has brought a bipartisan, pragmatic approach to the U.S. Senate, where he is working to solve problems and address issues important to Indiana and our country. He has been consistently recognized as one of the most bipartisan Senators.

After being elected to the Senate in 2012, Joe has been working hard to find moderate, common sense solutions to increase job opportunities for working- and middle-class families, address the opioid abuse and heroin epidemics, and improve access to quality mental health care for servicemembers and veterans.

Joe has led the charge in the effort to prevent military suicide. Provisions from his bipartisan "Servicemember and Veterans Mental Health Care Package" were signed into law in late 2015 that will improve the quality of and access to mental health care for servicemembers. In 2014, his Jacob Sexton Military Prevention Suicide Act was signed into law, requiring for the first time that all servicemembers have an annual mental health assessment.

Another priority for Joe has been addressing the opioid abuse and heroin use epidemics devastating families and communities across the nation. For several years, Joe has worked on bipartisan legislation to combat these epidemics, and significant portions of his bill were included in the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, signed into law in July 2016.

He serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Banking Committee, Agriculture Committee, and Aging Committee. On the Armed Services Committee, he is the Ranking Member of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee.

Joe was elected in 2006 to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served three terms representing north central Indiana. Prior to serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Joe was an attorney and small business owner. He went to Notre Dame for undergrad and law school.
